We are doomed!!

This happened a few years back, but it pops in my head whenever I head to the airport. My boyfriend and I were heading to California for the holidays during the 2005 transit strike. I had booked our flights a few months in advance for the morning of December 21st. I had called ahead and scheduled a Super Shuttle since we were on a tight budget. As the transit strike loomed, I called around to try to make sure that the Super Shuttle would be able to take us, since the city had implemented the emergency traffic plan not letting cars with less than four passengers below 96th street. We lived on 98th. Amazingly, the Super Shuttle arrived and picked us up first, but there were only two of us and the driver - his next pick up was below 96th street. As our anxious driver pulled up to the police barricade, he turned to us and said “If they don’t let us pass, we will be doomed!” My boyfriend and I were concerned, but our driver seemed downright terrified! Thankfully we made it past since he convinced the police that there were more passengers to pickup.

Traffic was light once we went past 96th street, but our driver was still concerned and kept repeating more and more emphatically that if we didn’t make it to the airport in time “we would be doomed”. By the time we got there, my boyfriend and I couldn’t stop giggling.

That boyfriend became my husband and to this day, when we are traveling, you can hear my husband mutter, "If they don't let us (past security, check in, buy this coffee, fill in the blank) we will be doomed!!” much to my delight.
